The incident took place around 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 1, when New York City Police officers in Rockaway responded to a 911 call of a water rescue at the Beach 96th Street and Broadwalk, said the NYPD.
When police arrived they were told that three teen males were struggling to make it back to shore while swimming, police said.
A 15-year-old male was rescued by a Good Samaritan, police said.
The rescued teen told police that his friends were still in the water. Lifeguards have not been on duty since the end of the season, last month.
The search was called off later Tuesday due to darkness and the dangerous, choppy water conditions.
Early Wednesday, Oct. 2, police divers, Coast Guard officials, NYC Parks & Recreation Department (Parks) and local first responders from Jones Beach and Sandy Hook are back on the scene attempting to locate the two teens, police said.
